The HEART Initiative

Growing Minds, Grounded Hearts

At Nichols Middle School, learning is designed to shape more than what students know. It shapes how they think, how they lead, how they treat others, and how they understand themselves.

Through the HEART Initiative, students in Grades 5–8 build the skills, habits, and values that help them grow into thoughtful classmates, confident learners, and engaged members of their community.

Led by Head of Middle School Greg Plumb and embraced by Middle School faculty, staff, and counselors, HEART is intentionally woven into the student experience. It comes to life through advisory, classroom learning, wellness conversations, student recognition, community-building experiences, and meaningful reflection.

A journey through Middle School

List of 4 items.

  • Grade 5: Stories & Self

Students begin by exploring who they are and how stories help us understand one another. Through reading, writing, personal narratives, and literature, they build empathy, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging.
  • Grade 6: Voice & Perspective

Students learn how their voices shape the communities around them. They strengthen writing and analytical thinking while exploring fairness, relationships, collaboration, and the importance of listening to different perspectives.
  • Grade 7: Bridging School & Community

Students begin to look outward, connecting their learning to Buffalo and the world beyond campus. Through local projects, guest speakers, field visits, wellness reflection, and alumni conversations, they deepen self-awareness and civic responsibility.
  • Grade 8: Voice & Values

Students reflect on what matters most to them and how they want to lead. Through research, public speaking, and their “This I Believe” capstone speeches, they develop the confidence to share their values with clarity and purpose.
