How Brotherhood Changed Nichols Basketball Culture
Nichols School
The Nichols School varsity boys basketball team had one of its best seasons in years during the 2025–26 season. The Vikings finished with a 21–6 record, the program’s best since 2010.
Competing in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association, Nichols continued to prove itself as one of the top teams in Western New York. A standout highlight of the campaign was a nine-game winning streak, which gave the Vikings momentum and confidence heading into the playoffs.
In the postseason, Nichols defeated Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School, 49–43 in the Manhattan Cup quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. The Vikings’ stellar run came to an end in a tight battle with the Marauders from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, falling just short in a 50-48 thriller.
Some players also earned major recognition for their performances this season. Senior guard Tre Paulfrey was named Monsignor Martin Co-Player of the Year, while senior forward Mitchell Masiello earned Second Team All-Catholic honors. From WNY Athletics, Paulfrey was named WNY Player of the Year and senior Justin Benning collected 6th Man of the Year honors.
Beyond the record and accolades, what stood out most about this team was its bond. Team captain Tre Paulfrey reflected on the group’s connection, saying “the chemistry was different from the last four years,” adding that “we are family and will be brothers for life… we have changed the culture of Nichols, and we are all proud of what we accomplished.”
Senior captain Drew Bennett echoed the sentiment of a shifting culture. “This season was special because of how close we all were. It wasn’t just about basketball. We genuinely cared about each other, and that’s what made this team different.” He also reflected on the seniors’ legacy, adding, “We knew we had a chance to do something special this year, and we proved what Nichols basketball can be. Hopefully we set the standard for the guys coming up.”
This season was Matt Hartman’s second year as head coach, and the team made great progress under his leadership. With a strong group of seniors and a successful season overall, the 2025–26 Vikings leave behind a legacy as one of the most impactful teams in Nichols basketball history.
