Nichols Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

February 2, 2022 marked the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. For 36 years, this day has been an opportunity to inspire athletic participation from girls and women and recognize their accomplishments.

Nichols School offers 36 athletics teams for girls in grades 5-12. Over 200 Nichols graduates have gone on to play women’s NCAA athletics, including 43 in the past four years.

"Sports have always played an important, exciting role in my life through youth sports, high school, college, and my coaching and athletic administration career for the past 25 years," coach and Associate Director of Athletics Holly Kemp said. "I loved competing, playing, hanging out with my teammates, and making lifelong memories. I now love watching my players learn new skills, compete at a high level, bond with teammates, celebrate a win or championship, apply the lessons from a loss, and treat opponents and officials with grace and respect."

"My favorite saying is, 'Athletes do not know how much you know until they know how much you care,'" coach and physical education teacher Molly Gasuik said. "I love coaching. It is honestly my favorite thing to do. There is so much that goes into coaching – it's not just about wins and losses. It's more than that. It is about teaching your athletes life lessons, how to be a better person, teammate, and student. I try to be the best role model I can be for my team. I think it's important to create a bond with your athletes – if you are honest with them they will have that mutual respect and be honest back."

What do some of our current and alumni student-athletes and coaches enjoy most about sports?

Ashlyn Ball '25: "I love playing sports because it is fun and I like making new friends on the teams I play for."

LaNiya Sheppard '25: Her favorite quote is “Basketball isn’t just a sport, it is an art, one that must be mastered to succeed.” – Steph Curry

Iman Sheikh '25: Her favorite quote is “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan

Mary Charles '25: "Athletics help me escape from reality or any emotions. I love the opportunity to make new friendships and bonds."

Ella Fishkin '24: "I love competing and being part of a team."

Ella Morris '24: Her favorite quote is “Don’t let anybody work harder than you do” – Serena Williams.

Maddy Diamond '25: “I love playing basketball for many reasons. Just for the love of the game and how I feel when I am on the court. The bonds I have with my teammates and coaches, and for the life lessons I learned while playing is why I love basketball.”

Paula Krupa '86: “Nichols gave me the opportunity to play a sport in college – especially lacrosse as it was not popular in the area at the time. As a student, you don’t realize the academic advantage Nichols gives you in preparing for the rigors of college.”

Coach Caroline Krupa: “Being an athlete taught me a lot of life lessons: how to be a good teammate, how to work with others, how to manage my time wisely. I was lucky enough to learn what it meant to be a part of something bigger than myself through sports. Now, I am so glad I get to continue to share those life lessons through coaching.”

Avery O'Carroll '24: “I love sports because of the bond I make with my teammates and the encouragement I get from my coaches and friends."

Mia Anderson '24: “I love sports because I enjoy the friendly competition of my friends and it helps me strive to be a better athlete and encourages me to reach my full potential. I love every coach that has brought me to where I am today and I love encouraging others on and off the court.”

Ellen Fox '27: "I play hockey in school and do Tae Kwon Do outside of school. They have both made me love competing and working hard. Tae Kwon Do has helped me with a variety of skills, including balance, flexibility, and strength, which helps me in other activities and sports. Sports have benefited me in so many ways and I am glad I have them in my life."
