Nichols 16U Earns First Win

The Nichols 16U earned their first win of the season taking on the Utica Comets Saturday afternoon. Lead by the leaders of the team Nichols fought through poor execution and breaks of the game to earn the win. Assistant captain Jeremy McDonald scored the first goal of the season for Nichols when he picked up the pass from Freshman Luke White and roofed a backhander against the Utica goaltender. Utica was able to tie the game up off the transition but Nichols responded when Junior Nicholas Botzenhart picked up his own rebound and circled the net and wristed the puck past Utica. Nichols continued to get great efforts from the team from then on with Junior Michael Stewart giving a great effort one on one followed by Payne Gatewood who did not give up on a rush play to bury the rebound in the third. Assistant captain Sophomore Carter Lukowski was finally rewarded for all the effort he gave for two games when he buried a rebound late in the third to finish the game for Nichols. Sophomore Matt Alberti was strong in net stopping 23 of 25 shot and earning his first win. Nichols will be back at it on Sunday as they take on St. Francis 16U.
