Nichols School Mourns the Loss of Head of School Chris Burner

Nichols School
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our Head of School, Christopher D. Burner.

For the past seven years, Chris led Nichols with thoughtfulness, steadiness, and a genuine love for this community. He was not simply the person in the head’s office. He was a familiar face in the hallways, on the sidelines, and in the front row of concerts and assemblies. Many of us came to know him not just as a leader, but as a mentor, colleague, and friend.

A graduate of Western Reserve Academy (Class of 1980), he carried with him a deep appreciation for the kind of education that shapes both intellect and character. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Franklin and Marshall College, a Master of Education from Harvard University, and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Dartmouth College. Education was both his profession and his life’s work.

Before arriving at Nichols, Chris spent nearly three decades at his alma mater, Western Reserve Academy. There, he served as a Latin and History teacher, wrestling and lacrosse coach, Dean of Faculty, and ultimately Head of School from 2008 to 2018. His impact extended well beyond titles. Former students often spoke about the time he took to listen to them, challenge them, and celebrate their growth. Receiving the Robert Weiss Award for his influence on the senior class was a reflection of that personal investment.

When Chris came to Nichols, he brought experience, certainly, but more importantly, he brought presence. He made it a point to know our students. He visited classrooms not out of obligation, but out of curiosity. He showed up consistently, whether to cheer at a game or to congratulate a student after a performance. He understood that schools are built on relationships.

He also cared deeply about faculty and staff, believing that strong schools depend on talented educators who feel supported and valued. He took pride in building and sustaining that strength here.

As we process this loss, our thoughts are especially with Chris’s family: his wife, Amanda; his children, Matthew and Abigail; his parents; and his sisters. In this time of reflection, we also remember his late wife, Alison, with fondness. The Burner family has long been part of the independent school community, and we hold them in our prayers and stand ready to support them in the days ahead.

In the coming weeks, the Cabinet will continue to guide the school's daily work. Dan Dolan will oversee operational matters, and Erin Habelt will lead academic and student affairs, with the support of the Board’s Executive Committee and Chair. Chris cared deeply about the stability of Nichols, and we remain committed to honoring that care through steady leadership.

We will share information about a memorial gathering as plans are finalized. Counselors will remain available on campus for students, faculty, and staff as we navigate this time together.

Chris once wrote, “A commitment to the mission of the school and the education of students drives my activities and decisions.” Those words feel especially meaningful now. We will carry that commitment forward — together — in his memory.
