Empowering Middle Schoolers Through Community Mentorship

Nichols School
Step into the Middle School’s Teaching & Mentoring Club, and you'll immediately sense the buzzing energy of collaboration. This isn't just about homework help. It's about building genuine connections that empower middle school students, guided by college mentors from the University at Buffalo.

The club was born from a simple observation. While academic resources at Nichols are plentiful, the social-emotional bridge between middle school and the "real world" is where students often look for guidance. Ms. Holly Cercone saw an opportunity to bring fresh perspectives from the University at Buffalo (UB) by connecting middle school students with mentors who are currently navigating the rigors of college life.

For UB students like Ryan O’Donnell, it’s a chance to give back. “I’m an undergrad pursuing a career as a doctor, and I’ve always found value in working with the community,” he shares. “I want to act as a role model. I’m working toward being the first doctor in my family, so I had to start from scratch. I want to leave these students with the encouragement that they can do it too.”

The impact on students is clear. Dante, a middle schooler in the club, highlights the personalized attention. “Having the mentors here makes it a lot easier to get my homework done, to be honest. But they also help with stuff that isn't in a textbook, like how to manage my time better and stay organized.” He adds that these lessons spill over into his daily school life, making him feel more prepared, focused, and confident in the classroom.

Jace Woodall, another UB mentor, emphasizes the practical life skills being fostered. “I want to give these students skills that they can actually use, like learning how to prioritize,” he says. “In college, there isn't a teacher hovering over you; it’s all about self-discipline. If we can instill those habits now, it will carry them through the rest of their lives.”

As a pilot program, the club is still evolving, growing alongside the students it serves. It’s a work in progress, but the demand has already exceeded expectations. Whether they are discussing classwork, the Olympics, or just how to be a better community member, the goal remains the same: meeting the students exactly where they are.

The Teaching & Mentoring Club is a tremendous example of how connecting students with positive role models can make a profound difference. As Ms. Cercone aptly puts it, “It's what the students need at any particular time.”
