Boys Soccer Defeats St. Mary's

Goal: Belal, 26’

The rain-soaked exhibition ended after just forty minutes due to lightning, but the boys in green won their third straight game, 2-0, against St. Mary’s. Facing the only other undefeated team in the Monsignor-Martin league, the Vikings came in believing themselves the better team, a motivation that manifested itself in the shortened win. The scoring was dramatic: first, Anthony Rambino, the electric sophomore right midfielder, lobbed a ball into the box. The Lancer keeper mishandled the wet ball, and it slipped into the net behind him. Then, just eight minutes later, junior defensive midfielder Michael Tuber––who technically got an assist on the Rambino goal––laced one of his signature surgical longballs into the opposing defense, finding the feet of senior target-man Karim Belal. He took a strong touch before sliding forward to get a shot off, nutmegging the keeper for his third goal of the year. Perhaps the best Nichols team in a long time, the schedule stays exciting with an away game at Christian Central tomorrow, followed by a pivotal matchup against Canisius––the only league opponent to slow this team––at home on Friday.
