Summary: Nichols School seeks a passionate and student-centered Middle School English teacher to join our faculty for
the 2025-2026 school year. This position includes teaching multiple sections of 8th grade English, which offers the Pre-AP English 1 framework for students. It is a course that builds the reading, writing, and language skills essential for students’ success in our upper school and beyond. The ideal candidate will strongly emphasize close, critical reading and analytical writing in utilizing the Pre-AP English 1 framework. Students learn to observe small details in a text to develop a deeper understanding of the whole while also honing their ability to craft complex sentences and build toward longer-form written analysis. Texts take center stage in the course, and the curriculum supports the development of thoughtful, engaged readers and confident, capable writers.
Duties:- Teach multiple sections of Middle School English with a primary focus on 8th grade.
- Create and design lessons, instruction, and assessments with the Pre-AP English 1 framework.
- Adapt lessons and approaches to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Serve as Middle School advisor.
- Work closely and effectively with members of the English department to ensure that the curriculum flows smoothly.
- Communicate with parents proactively, positively, and professionally to support the academic, social-emotional, and physical needs of students.
- Engage in continued professional development.
- Foster a supportive and engaging classroom environment.
- Identify and respond to the individual academic, social, and emotional needs of students, including learning differences, in collaboration with our Learning Specialist.
- Attend scheduled division, grade team, and department meetings.
- Participate in the traditions, culture, and events of the Middle School.
- Perform other duties to support the division and/or school as a whole as assigned. The capacity to contribute in other areas is a valuable consideration.
Skills and Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Teaching experience in English preferred.
- Passion for working with middle school students.
- Strong background in the teaching of writing and literature.
- Creative, enthusiastic, and growth-mindset approach to learning.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Genuine concern for students and their learning success.
- Collaborative approach to working with other faculty members, administrators, and staff to further its mission.
- Excellent interpersonal and classroom management skills.
- Ability to be flexible and go with the flow in a dynamic school setting.
