The Nichols boys federation hockey team earned a 5-4 overtime win over Chaminade High School on March 5 to win the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) state championship game.

London Goodwin '24 scored three goals, including another overtime game-winning goal, with Nate Bair '23 and Ross Yoshida '25 rounding out the goal scoring. Christian Schwartz '23 made 35 saves in net to earn the win.

After Goodwin opened the scoring with a highlight-reel goal, Bair scored shorthanded to make it 2-0 Nichols after 20 minutes. Chaminade outshot Nichols 19-2 in the second period, but Goodwin's second goal of the afternoon made it 3-2. Yoshida scored 23 seconds into the third period, before Chaminade stormed back to force overtime at 4-4.

Goodwin completed the hat trick on the power play just 41 seconds into overtime, securing the state title for the Vikings. Goodwin was also the overtime hero on Monday, scoring the winning goal as Nichols defeated St. Francis to win the Niagara Cup as Monsignor Martin champions.

“From day one, people wrote us off the map because of how young we are. We don’t have a lot of huge names on our team,” Nichols coach RJ Gicewicz '14 told The Buffalo News postgame. “But guys bought in from day one. It’s a really tight locker room, great leadership. We live to our core values & play to our standard and identity on a game-by-game basis.”

Congratulations to the Vikings on a sensational end to the season!
