Nichols School Celebrates 129th Verdian Day

Friday, May 28, 2021 marked the 129th celebration of Verdian Day, an annual celebration which commemorates the accomplishments of students, faculty and staff throughout the past school year. In the Flickinger Performing Arts Center, the day’s festivities began with the presentation of the William Nichols Award, followed by the Middle School and Upper School dedications of the 2021 Verdian yearbook.

The William Nichols Award was presented to Upper School history teacher and Service and Social Justice coordinator Kevin Powers. Powers, described in a citation by his colleague Caitlin Crowell as “the conscience of Nichols School,” was recognized for his above-and-beyond efforts leading Nichols students and community members and driving change in the classroom and throughout Western New York. The William Nichols Award recognizes members of the faculty and staff who have contributed to the overall quality of a Nichols education.

This year’s Middle School dedications were given to math teacher Wendy Mittlefehldt and physical education teacher and Bobby Ross. Mittlefehldt was lauded for her kindness, warmth and support in the classroom and recognized for the impact she has on her students. Ross was recognized for his care and support for students with workouts during times of virtual learning, as well as his positive and optimistic nature that lifts everyone on campus. Dedications were read by Lucy Coburn ’25 and Sun Jae Nigalye ’25.
