On Thursday, May 20, three Nichols School seniors received academic recognition at the Erie-Niagara Scholastic Achievement Recognition Dinner (SARD). Jung Hwan “Daniel” Choi ’21, Samantha Meyo ’21 and Joshua Stead-Dorval ’21 were honored for their excellence in the classroom in their years as Nichols students. Dr. Aranya Maritime, Nichols School’s Dean of Academics, joined the group at this event.

The SARD is an annual opportunity to spotlight outstanding students and promote the importance of academic proficiency in the Western New York community. Top graduating seniors from each participating Erie and Niagara County high school are recognized at a dinner and receive a specially commissioned crystal bison.

Each student earned recognition in different ways as they were nominated for this honor by Director of College Counseling Mike Wagstaff.

Choi’s energy, life and enthusiasm stood out most to those who have taught and advised him. One teacher noted, “I am so very happy that Daniel’s path crossed with mine this year. He volunteers to read, is unafraid to try out new ideas, asks excellent questions, and is also a very good listener when his peers are sharing their thoughts. Daniel’s insight is matched only by his kindness. He makes our room a more productive and welcoming place for all.”

Meyo was recognized for her kindness, caring and passion for helping others as a frequent volunteer at Nichols and in the Western New York community and as a top student at Nichols. “Her outlook, positivity, work ethic and enthusiasm for all that she is involved with is infectious,” Wagstaff added.

Stead-Dorval, an eight-year Nichols student, was a standout student and an excellent musician, being named twice to the New York State School Music Association’s Conference All-State Orchestra. In the classroom, teachers noted his thinking and thought process as what set him apart. Peers noted Stead-Dorval is “insightful, very passionate, clear-headed, composed, a reliable friend with a deep understanding of people.”

Congratulations once again to Daniel, Samantha and Joshua on this recognition for their academic excellence!
