Nichols School Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Wednesday, February 3, 2021 marked the 35th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The day recognizes the athletic accomplishments of girls and women, and commemorates the passing of Title IX legislation, which ensured the right to equal opportunity in sports for women.

In 1973, Nichols School offered girls field hockey, soccer, volleyball and basketball, while tennis, softball, track, lacrosse, ski and squash were added in 1974. Crew, ice hockey and cross country were added as girls sports in the 1990’s, and golf was added in 2005.

Nichols currently offers a total of 30 sports teams for girls from grades 5-12, including 14 varsity programs. Last year, 91% of Upper School girls participated in at least one sport, including dance. Since 2010, 61 Nichols females have been named All-WNY Scholar Athletes, and 133 have gone on to play collegiate athletics.

In a video presentation at Tuesday’s Upper School meeting, Julia Peters ’23 narrated a video presentation about this history of girls sports at Nichols, and several Nichols students and alumni shared the impact playing sports had on their lives.
