2018-19 Research Scholars Work Published in Journal of Surgical Research

During the 2018-19 school year, Nichols School seniors were selected into the inaugural Research Scholars elective class. The end product of that class was a research paper examining the impact of minimally invasive surgery for cancer patients. Their work, completed in collaboration with scientists from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and titled “Approach to Resectable N1 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: An Analysis of the National Cancer Database,” was recently accepted for publication in the Journal of Surgical Research in March 2021.

Najya Fayyaz ’19, Breanna Nelson ’19, Sarah Rodwin ’19 and Nick Scott ’19 conducted this research under the supervision of Upper School science teacher RJ Bouchard and Dr. Sai Yendamuri P’20, ’25, head of thoracic surgery at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Over the course of the school year, the students crafted a research question, conducted background research, outlined a proposal for statistical analysis which was conducted by a team from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, reviewed the results of the study and assembled a draft of a final manuscript.

Scott presented the group’s research findings at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery Research Day in the spring of 2019, and in the fall of 2019, Fayyaz presented the work to the International Thoracic Surgical Oncology Summit in Chicago, IL.
