Steven Hall '21 Receives Excellence Award in Chinese Proficiency Competition

On Thursday, September 3, the University at Buffalo Confucius Institute announced that Steven Hall '21 received the Excellence Award in the 13th annual "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for High School Students. Hall placed third in the Eastern U.S. Region in the 2020 competition.

In this year's remote competition, student contestants were required to submit one video of a Chinese speech and a second video of a Chinese performance.

Now a senior at Nichols, Hall has studied Chinese since fifth grade with teachers Rong "Cindy" Yan and Yajie Zhang. His speech focused on explaining how the world is one global family, with all members helping each other in times of need. For the talent video, Hall sang “思念”, a song by Mao Amin, which tells the story of friends yearning to see each other after a long time apart. Hall chose this song because of familiarity and his connection with friends in Wuhan, China.

Congratulations Steven on this great honor!
