Nine Nichols School Students Win Awards in Virtual Art Alive 2020

Each year, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery hosts Art Alive, which tasks local artists to dive into creative solutions to recreate famous works of art in our physical space. With the in-person competition for 2020 canceled, awards were announced in an online ceremony on May 8.

In the Schools Category, a group of eight Nichols Middle School students won the People’s Choice Award for their visual re-creation of Vassily Kandinsky’s Fragment 2 for Composition VII from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery Collection. The team that created this work included Fiona B. ’25, Phoebe E. ’26, Reed E. ’24, Avery O. ’24 and Ryann O ’24, Megha P. ’26, Brenna R. ’26 and Claire W. ’26.

“Art Alive takes many hours and weeks after school to recreate, but I knew our students were up for the challenge to create the work virtually and their hard work has paid off once again,” Middle School visual arts teacher Kari Achatz said. “I could not be more proud of our students.”

Congratulations to all our students who won awards in this year’s competition!
