Sydney Wells ’20 Named Independent Health Community All-Star

Nichols School senior Sydney Wells ’20 was named a 2020 Community All-Star, presented by Independent Health and Buffalo Business First. Wells was honored as a Community All-Star for making a positive difference in the lives of her fellow students and people in her community.

Concerned about others’ well-being and health, Wells has worked with Nichols School’s Heart Club the past four years raising awareness about various issues and fundraising for many organizations. This year she was the head of the Heart Club and a senior leader of the program.

Wells was the head coordinator for this year’s Dance Marathon which raises money for the Children’s Miracle Network, a non-profit that raises funds for children’s hospitals and community awareness of children’s health issues. She also co-founded the Baking for Charity Club, where she leads groups of bakers to host bake sales for a variety of charities that are important to her and her fellow students.

Wells is also incredibly visible as a representative of Nichols School. A member of the Green Key Club, Wells volunteers as a student ambassador to welcome prospective students and families visiting campus. Wells was also selected by the faculty as one of twenty members of her class to be a part of Advancement of Leadership in the Eighth Grade (A-LEG), an eighth-grade mentoring program to help them prepare for the transition to ninth grade. She met with a group of students on a weekly basis during the 2018-19 school year as eighth graders, and continued to support their transition this year as a senior when her advisees were ninth graders.

Director of College Counseling Mike Wagstaff nominated Wells for this award, describing her as a “remarkable young woman.”

“She is talented in so many ways, but she achieves well beyond what all her talents earn her,” Wagstaff said. “Sydney’s family, peers and faculty look up to her not because of all her success, but because she is such a genuine person with a strong heart. She is full of life and is willing to share it with everyone. Sydney has made a significant impact on the Nichols campus and I know that she will do so in the next community she joins.”

After graduating from Nichols, Wells will be attending Columbia University this fall.

Thank you Sydney for your contributions to the Nichols community and congratulations on this outstanding honor!
