Nichols Varsity Squash Teams Excel at 2020 US High School Team Squash Championships

The Nichols School varsity boys and girls squash teams attended the 2020 HEAD US High School Team Squash Championships this past weekend in the Hartford, CT region from February 21-23.

The girls team was seeded in Division 2, the team's highest seed ever, entering the tournament as one of the top 32 teams in the country. After a pair of wins over Westminster School (5-2) and Milton Academy (6-1), Nichols lost a close 4-3 game to St. Paul's School of New Hampshire in the semifinals. Another narrow 4-3 defeat against Hotchkiss in the final match of the tournament gave girls squash a fourth-place finish in Division 2, placing them as the 20th-best team in the country.

The varsity girls squash team headed into Nationals with an impressive 14-2 record against local teams and schools from New England and Ontario and graduates just one player this year. Maureen Foley '21, a nationally-ranked U-19 player who went 4-0 at nationals this weekend, led the team this season. Reilly Hamill '21, Zahra Khan '21, Ali Stevens '21, Laura Franz '22, Gabriela Gallen-Kallela-Sirén '22 and Ellie Wyckoff '20 rounded out the team's roster for Nationals this weekend.

Boys varsity squash was seeded in Division 6 to start the tournament and opened with a 4-3 victory over Radnor High School from Pennsylvania. Wins over Dexter Southfield (5-2) and Lancaster Country Day School (4-3) pushed the boys into the final of Division 6, where they were defeated 6-1 by Malvern Prep.

The boys varsity squash team currently stands at 16-6 overall for the season after winning three of four matches at Nationals. Trey Denman 21, Jacob Stoffman '24, Cutler Greene '23, Max Koch '20, Martin Emmons '24, A.J. Tanneff '21 and Ian Kellogg '21 were the seven boys to represent Nichols at Nationals this year.

Students from both the varsity boys and girls squash teams will be competing in the CISAA championships on Wednesday, February 26 at the Mayfair Clubs in Toronto to close out the season.

Congratulations on an exciting, successful showing from both squash teams at the US High School Team Squash Championships!
