Nichols Lacrosse Players Earn Regional, National Honors

Two recent graduates of Nichols School and soon-to-be Division I student-athletes were recognized for their excellence in lacrosse at Nichols. Abbey Gicewicz '19 was announced as the Western New York recipient of the Jackie Pitts Award from US Lacrosse, a prestigious national honor. Jack DiBenedetto '19 was honored as the All-WNY Defensive Player of the Year and a First-Team All-WNY member at the Borrelli Awards on Monday, June 24.

Gicewicz was named a Jackie Pitts Award winner, announced by US Lacrosse on Tuesday, July 2. The Jackie Pitts Award recognizes graduating seniors from each region who honors the game of lacrosse and invests in the growth of the game, in addition to being a strong role model in the classroom and in the community. Gicewicz was also named Nichols' team MVP and was awarded the Alumni Cup at this year's Verdian Day awards ceremony. Off the field, Gicewicz was a four-year member of student council, serving as the senior class president in 2018-19, and she volunteers with her family at St. Luke's Mission in Buffalo. She was also named as an Honorable Mention All-WNY team member.

Gicewicz is attending the University of Vermont and will begin her collegiate career with the Catamounts next spring.

Another Alumni Cup winner from the Class of 2019, DiBenedetto capped a stellar Nichols career with top honors in Western New York, being named First Team All-WNY and being named the region's Defensive Player of the Year. He was recognized with other top local players at the Tom Borrelli Lacrosse Awards on June 24, named after the late Buffalo News sports reporter. The First-Team All-WNY honor was the second of DiBenedetto's time at Nichols. He was also named twice to Under Armour All-American teams and was a Player of the Game at the 2019 Section VI Exceptional Senior Game.

DiBenedetto will continue his lacrosse career at the University of Denver.

Congratulations to Abbey and Jack on their exceptional careers with the Vikings!
