Meet our counselors! Nichols School is incredibly lucky to have two counselors on staff: Mary Flanigan, Middle School Counselor and Wellness Teacher (right), and Danielle Vallas '95, Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Wellness Director (left). We are also so fortunate to have Georgie, Danielle's Certified Therapy Dog, on campus every day. We asked them why they love working at Nichols, and here is some of what they shared:
Ms. Vallas: "One of reasons that I love teaching at Nichols is that we focus on educating the whole student, in and out of the classroom. We "train minds, bodies and hearts for the work of life." As a health educator and Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I feel tremendous support to highlight health and wellness at school each day. For example, this year, my Certified Therapy Dog Georgie comes to school with me to help support students and adults with their days. Every Monday morning in the Upper School, we begin Morning Meetings with "Mindful Mondays." This is an incredible opportunity for the school community to learn and practice mindfulness together."
Mrs. Flanigan: "My favorite part about working at Nichols is how student-centered we are. It's refreshing to see teachers who truly care about students and have a great connection with their students' families. Teachers here are given the right amount of freedom to create lessons for our students that are current and useful, as opposed to having to teach to a test. I really think that our students thrive from that creativity! I love to see all of the hands-on projects during class in the Middle School, as well."
