Author and Illustrator Jim Averbeck visits Middle School

In March, author and illustrator Jim Averbeck visited sixth grade English classes and an eighth grade science class. Students read the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, which tells the true story of The Lost Boys of Sudan. Ms. Park originally wrote the book as a newspaper series with illustrations by Jim Averbeck, who shared with Middle School students his experiences as a Peace Corp volunteer specializing in water projects and water sanitation in Africa. Mr. Averbeck also discussed the elements of suspense in his thrilling mystery novel, A Hitch at the Fairmont, which draws heavily on the life and work of the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock.
