Girls Golf 2019
The girls golf team had a successful season. Led by seven veteran seniors, the competition began at Legends on the Niagara in a scramble hosted by Nichols. The girls placed 3rd in that event and were excited about the potential of the season. The second tournament of the year was in Ajax, Ontario and with two top scores of 91 (Sarah Franco-Vila ’24) and 95 (Rachel Urbank ’19) the team tied for first place in the event. Traveling to Barrie, Ontario in mid-May for the third season tournament, the Vikings finished in third place behind Elle Ackerman ’21 and Emma Stephen’s ’21 matching scores to lead the team. After qualifying for the championships, the four top golfers traveled back to Ajax and placed 4th in the CISAA Championships. In the regular season, the team placed 3rd overall in the CISAA league. Jeanne Gandon ’19 and Jillian Niedzialowski ’19 received the Coaches Awards. Sam Meyo ’21 and Rachel Urbank ’19 were the Most Improved Golfers. Seniors Jeanne Gandon, Jillian Niedzialowski and Rachel Urbank all received Honorable Mention All-WNY Scholar-Athlete. The team thanks the seven seniors for their leadership and dedication!

Girls golf enjoyed a solid season. They entered three CISAA Tournaments and culminated the season with the CISAA Championships. They also had a great win over Fredonia. The girls won the first CISAA Tournament at Legends of the Niagara over Holy Name of Mary. They placed third at Deer Creek and second at Royal Ashburn. In a heartbreaker, the team missed second place at the championship by one stroke to finish third. Claire Foley ‘18, Jillian Niedzialowski ’19 received the Coaches Awards. Emma Stephen ‘21 was the Most Improved Golfer. The leadership of the 3 seniors will be missed. Your time & talent is appreciated!
Ronald Montesano received a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and a master’s degree from Middlebury College. He also completed all coursework and exams toward a doctorate at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He teaches Upper School Spanish and serves as a chaperone to the Costa Rican and Spanish cultural exchange programs. In addition, Ronald is the Girls and Boys Golf Coach and directs the School’s summer golf camp. Ronald participates frequently in workshops and seminars on Foreign Language Instruction. Prior to Nichols, he taught at D’Youville College, SUNY at Buffalo, Buffalo State College, Daemen College, Niagara University, Ohio University, Sweet Home High School and Buffalo Seminary. Outside of Nichols, he enjoys travel, athletics, fitness and technology. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Buffalo District Golf Association and directs the website, BuffaloGolfer.Com. He and his wife, Denice, are the proud parents of Anthony ’06, Anne Elizabeth ’10, Angelica ’13 and Alexandra ’14.
Holly Kemp joined Nichols School in 2007 as the Associate Director of Athletics and the Middle School Director of Athletics. She currently is the coach of the JV Girls’ Soccer and Varsity Girls’ Softball teams. Before joining the Nichols Athletics Department, she worked at Princeton Day School in Princeton, N.J., as the Assistant Director of Athletics and The Brearley School in New York City. During her career at Princeton Day School, she was the varsity softball coach and her team won the Prep B State Championship in 2006. Additionally, she was named Coach of the Year by the Princeton Packet, Trenton Times and Star Ledger while at the school. When she is not at Nichols, Holly enjoys playing softball, badminton , golf, rollerblading and reading. She also proudly has visited 29 of the 30 Major League Baseball stadiums.
