Crew - Varsity Boys & Girls
As usual, the crew team had a busy season once they were able to get on the water. The team was young so gained experience in every regatta. The season started at the Saratoga Invite where weather cancelled most of the races on Saturday, but calmed down for Sunday and all boats gained were able to race. For the first time, the team had an inter-squad challenge with Ridley. It was a fun day with the coaches organizing different workouts with each boat! After the Bennett Regatta, the team traveled back to Saratoga for the High School States. All boats at states qualified for their respective grand final and both the men’s and women’s Sr. 4+’s earned bids to SRAAs. At the Stotesbury Cup, younger crews gained experience and the women’s Jr. 4+ placed 5th in the semi-final race. Men’s Fr/Novice 8+ placed third at the Syracuse Chargers Invitational. The SRAAs were in Columbus, OH this year and the two young crews gained great experience. The season finished with the Fontana All-High at the home course of West Side Rowing Club. All of the Nichols boats in events with heats progressed to the finals and the girls Jr 4+ had a surprise win! Mackenzie Cordosi ’19 and Noah Daniels ’20 were Most Valuable Rowers. LeeAnn Wright ’19 and Katie Bean ’19 received the Coaches Awards. Chloe Desai ’21 and J’nae Fields ’22 were the Most Improved Rowers. Mackenzie Cordosi ’19 was named All-WNY Scholar-Athlete and Alex Shuman ’19 received Honorable Mention All-WNY Scholar-Athlete. Ted and Beth Marks have a long history in the sport of rowing, and Nichols is proud to have them at the helm of their crew program. Ted rowed at Nichols before the WSRC burned down (after which for a period of time all students had to row for the club), and both rowed for their respective universities. Both Ted and Beth rowed with the US National Lightweight Team. They still row and even compete on occasion. They have extensive experience coaching at both the club and high school level.
They became involved with the Nichols crew program in 2007. Ted currently coaches the boy’s varsity and Beth manages the program and coaches the girl’s varsity. During their tenure they have coached multiple NY State Scholastic Championship medalists, two of which qualified for Scholastic Nationals. Ten of their rowers have gone on to row in college.
Ted has a BS in business from Boston University. Beth has a BS in biology from Syracuse University and a MS in exercise physiology from the University of Pittsburgh. They have three boys - Graham, Derek and Teddy – who have all attended Nichols.
