Katherine Austen will join Nichols Middle School as a math teacher. Austen graduated from Canisius College with a dual degree in Mathematics and Adolescence Education, and earned a master's degree in Mathematics Education: Adolescence from the University at Buffalo. For the past nine years, Austen taught Math 8 and Algebra for Sweet Home Central Schools, where she was a mentor for student and pre-student teachers. Austen earned tenure in 2011. She was also a professor and tutor for Canisius College's Higher Education Opportunity Programs for six years. Austen was recognized by the Association for the Tutoring Profession as a Master Tutor, and received the Thomas W. Fitzsimmons Award in Adolescence Education and the Dr. William M. Huebsch Award in Mathematics from Canisius College. She enjoys gardening, hiking, kayaking, tennis and skiing in her spare time.
