Upper School Clubs & Student Organizations Amnesty International Amnesty International is an advocacy and consciousness-raising group that sponsors letter writing drives and petition signing events to free international prisoners of conscience. |

 Anti-Gravity Club Antigravity Club is the School’s outdoors club dedicated to educating students through exploration of the wilderness places in our world. The club takes a committed approach to teaching technical outdoor skills, leadership and wilderness ethics by immersing students in outdoor adventure. Through local meetings, instructor lead workshops, and annual expeditions club members participate in winter mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, skiing, white water paddling, camping and hiking. Emphasis is placed on balancing the physical challenges of outdoor activities and individual accomplishment with altruism, character building and reflection. |

 Book Review Club Students write book reviews of pre-published books and get them printed in the national magazine, "Voice for Youth Advocates." VOYA is a selection tool used by school librarians and public librarians that select reading material for young adults. The students read the review copies and discuss the story and then collaborate on a review.

 Chess Club The club practices on Tuesdays and Wednesdays before school. Players of all ages and abilities are a part of the team and more are welcome throughout the year. The Buffalo Area Playoff Tournament is held at the end of the season, usually in April. Nichols has placed third in the tournament the past two years. |

 Chinese Club Chinese Club offers a chance to learn, share and celebrate Chinese culture through movies, craft making, cooking and more. The club organizes monthly activities and welcomes all students. The first activity this year was making dumplings. |

  Dance Party Club Students gather together on a monthly basis to celebrate music and dance in a free form after school. |

 Gay Straight Alliance The Gay Straight Alliance is open to all students, and is a safe place to discuss issues related to the LGBT community. In addition to discussions, the group sponsors presentations and events that raise awareness of the challenges LGBT people face, and work to connect with other Western New York high school GSAs for conferences, open mics and movie nights. |

 Global Horizons The Nichols community is filled with students who were born in a foreign country, have parents or relatives from a foreign country, or are simply interested in learning about the lives and cultures of people from all around the world. The club’s goal is to spread awareness of these countries to the entire student body through sharing experiences from life, travels and inviting guests to tell their personal story of life abroad. |

 Green Key  The Green Key organization works with the Admissions Office to aid perspective students and families as they inquire about and visit Nichols. Many Green Key students serve as student hosts of visiting students. |

 HEART Health Education Awareness Resource Team is comprised of student leaders who educate their peers and work with organizations in the community about health issues, as well as participating in activities to promote health awareness. |

 Investment Club The group participates in The Buffalo News’ stock market competition by researching market trends and making weekly decisions about managing their portfolio. |

 Jewish Cultural Awareness Club (JCAC) The Jewish Cultural Awareness Club is a student-run organization to inform the Nichols community about Jewish culture. The JCAC holds events such as the Hanukah Harry Gift Exchange, the Rosh Hashanah Fruit Feast and other such meetings to inform the Nichols School student body about Jewish holidays, festivities and culture. |

 Math League The Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics materials to students. League specialties include math contests, books and computer software designed to stimulate interest and confidence in mathematics for students at both the Middle and Upper School levels. Over 1 million students participate in Math League contests each year. Contest questions are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level. |

 Mock Trial This club participates in a series of team competitions against other area high schools with the tutoring of legal counsel, presenting cases in front of standing judges who determine the winner based on the team presentation. |

 Model UN This competitive program sends Nichols delegates to conferences to represent the interests of specific nations on contemporary international issues. |

 Naked Voices Naked Voices is our after school singing ensemble. The group meets from 5:30 to 6:20 p.m., each week on alternating days in the Upper School Chorus Room. All voice parts are welcome, and members do not need to be in Chorus to join. The group performs at the Winter and Spring Upper School concerts, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Cabaret and other impromptu events. The selections are primarily "pop" in nature, and sometimes involve movement.

 Research Scholars Program
- Science Scholar: This program gives Nichols students the opportunity to conduct scientific research in the field in the Western New York area. Research facilities involved in this program include SUNY at Buffalo, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute. Students, under the guidance of research mentors, learn laboratory techniques, use state of the art equipment, and study the processes involved in completing college level and professional scientific research. All students participating in the program present their scientific findings to the Nichols community at a spring symposium. Students may request independent research credit though a petition to the Academic Review Committee.
- Humanities Scholar: This program gives Nichols seniors the opportunity to conduct humanities research in the Western New York area through SUNY at Buffalo. Depending on the length and intensity of the project, students may apply for independent study credit through the Academic Review Committee. Faculty members will serve as liaisons with university and institute personnel. Student participants are encouraged to apply to present their papers at conferences and seminars in which they present and defend their data before other scholars who evaluate its merits. They also are expected to attend local humanities events, lectures and demonstrations as observers. At the conclusion of the program, whether for the summer, one year or more, students will present a poster or presentation to other participants in the program, mentors, faculty, parents, teachers and students.

 Science Olympiad New York State Science Olympiad (NYSSO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of science education in grades 5-12, increasing male, female and minority interest in science, creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science and technology. These goals are achieved by providing opportunities for teams of students to participate in 22 regional and state Science Olympiad tournaments across New York State. NYSSO also promotes the inclusion of Science Olympiad activities in classroom curricula and provides teacher training at seminars and an annual coaches’ workshop. |

 SeeArtRun SeeArtRun is a student-curated art gallery located on the second floor of Mitchell Hall. |

 Ski Club Every Friday after dismissal throughout the ski season, club members and faculty chaperones travel by bus to a local ski area to enjoy Western New York’s famous snow. |

 Spirit Club Students lead their fellow classmates in cheering for others at athletic, artistic and community events. |

 SEAA Students for Environmental Awareness & Action are focused on creating and maintaining environmental projects across the Nichols campus. In conjunction with the Big Green Initiative, the School’s program supporting environmental consciousness and campus sustainability, the club works to create new initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint. |

 SUMA The Student Union for Multicultural Awareness is the campus organization that conducts discussion groups and develops educational programs to expand community awareness of our many cultures represented at School. |

 The Nichols Ringing Society This is a group of mostly Middle School Students who meet each Wednesday from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. in the Upper School Chorus Room to play our school's three octave handbell set. The group performs at both the Winter and Spring Middle School concerts. Membership is open to interested Upper School students as well. |

 Computer Club Student explore programming, game making with Microsoft Kodu, build computers and more. The club meets every Thursday afternoon after school. |

 Chamber Singers Admission to Chamber Singers is by audition only for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Students who are selected must demonstrate the ability to match pitch, project their voice and show above average musical ability, as well as exhibit leadership and a strong sense of responsibility to the group. This group will be called upon to perform and represent Nichols in the community and will participate in a spring adjudication. There are many solo and small opportunities available for students who would like the opportunity to do more than sing in the larger ensemble. Singers meet two days per week during study time. A final grade will be given at the end of the year based on the grading rubric handed out at the beginning of the term. All students and parents are required to sign a commitment contract, which is to be returned at the end of the first full week of rehearsals. Students also are required to participate in three concerts, Holiday, Eine Kleine and the Spring Performance, as well as competition in the late spring. |

 Concert Band Comprised of approximately 45 students in grades 5-8, the Band has students with abilities ranging from beginning to advanced. The group performs at the Winter and Spring Concerts, and is adjudicated annually at the High Note and NYSSMA Ensemble Festivals. Students in Concert Band attend weekly lessons and may elect to take part in the All-County and NYSSMA Solo Festivals. Each year our School is represented by several Nichols students in the All-County and Area All-State Band, Chorus and Orchestra. |

 String Ensemble Violin, viola, cello and string bass players of all abilities are invited to join this ensemble. This group usually consists of several ability-grouped smaller ensembles that come together for concerts to play chamber orchestra music. |

 The Kimberly Players (Theatre Team) Formerly known as Theatre Team, The Kimberly Players is open to any students interested in drama. The group meets after school twice a week to practice improvisation and other acting techniques, and produces short plays throughout the year. In 2011, the club was renamed The Kimberly Players in honor and memory of Mr. Kim Kimberly '47, who had his students doing plays at Nichols School before there was a drama program. |

 Youth Choir All 5th graders participate in chorus and sing in the winter and spring concerts. This group meets weekly. Many solo performance opportunities are available for interested students. This group gives our students the basic singing skills and stage presence that they will need throughout their middle school career. The students' classroom experience in music is often coordinated with their chorus work to give them a well-rounded musical background along with important performance skills. Attendance at the performances and rehearsals is mandatory, and assessment will take place at the end of the year with a progress report and a final grade in this class. |
