Nichols Core Competencies (Acrobat File)

Recognizing the unique emotional, intellectual, and developmental needs of pre-adolescents, the Middle School seeks to create an environment in which children will thrive. Our accepting and friendly atmosphere invites students to strive for excellence in the classroom, on the ice or playing field, and in a variety of visual and performing arts venues.

In all disciplines, the Middle School courses are designed to match course content and skill acquisition with the developmental needs of early adolescents. In general, the coursework progresses from the concrete to the abstract and seeks increasing sophistication and autonomy as a student moves from fifth through eighth grade. Dedicated, caring teachers at Nichols challenge, nurture, and support students as they navigate their course work, activities, and the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual challenges of early adolescence.

Highlights of the Middle School curriculum include:
  • Integrated curricula using interdisciplinary theme-based units;
  • Specialized grade-level teams of teachers;
  • Language instruction in Latin, French, and Spanish;
  • Integrated courses in visual arts, drama, and music;
  • Drama, band, strings, and choral performance groups;
  • State-of-the-art technology instruction;
